The real question in Zendesk vs. Gorgias isn't "which is better" — it's general-purpose breadth vs. e-commerce specialization. Gorgias is a help desk purpose-built for online stores: order, refund, and subscription actions live inside the ticket, and it can even attribute revenue to support. Zendesk is a general-purpose platform built for any industry at scale. Even the pricing models encode the difference — Gorgias charges per ticket, Zendesk per agent — and that's the crux of the decision. This guide uses verified June-2026 pricing and does the crossover math most comparisons skip.

Zendesk vs. Gorgias (2026): General-Purpose vs. E-commerce

Short version: Gorgias if you're a Shopify/DTC brand whose tickets are mostly order-related; Zendesk if you're general-purpose, high-volume, or need depth and scale beyond e-commerce.

The 30-second verdict

If you are…Pick
A Shopify / BigCommerce / DTC brandGorgias
Wanting agents to refund/edit orders inside the ticketGorgias
Tying support to revenue (pre-sales chat → sales)Gorgias
A small/efficient team with manageable ticket volumeGorgias
General-purpose or multi-industry (SaaS, finance, B2B)Zendesk
High ticket volume (2,000+/mo) or 30+ agentsZendesk
Needing native voice, deep routing/SLAs, 1,500+ integrationsZendesk

How we compared: Zendesk and Gorgias pricing are verified against their official pages (June 2026); Gorgias's per-ticket model plus AI double-billing is flagged where it bites. Features are checked against the products — and we ran Zendesk hands-on in a live test account (screenshot below). User sentiment comes from real G2 and Capterra reviews. Macha is our own product — we flag that wherever it comes up.

Pricing: per-agent vs. per-ticket (opposite models)

Zendesk (per agent/month, annual): Support Team $19, Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115, Enterprise contact sales; Copilot $50/agent; AI agents ~$1.50–$2.00 per automated resolution. Cost scales with headcount. Source: Zendesk pricing.

Zendesk's per-agent pricing — cost scales with how many agents you have, not how many tickets.
Zendesk's per-agent pricing — cost scales with how many agents you have, not how many tickets.

Beyond the per-seat plans, Zendesk’s AI and CX capabilities are sold as separate add-ons — each priced per agent on top of your base plan:

Zendesk Featured add-ons pricing (2026): Copilot, Workforce Engagement Bundle, and Contact Center each at US$50 per agent/month billed annually, on top of the base plan.

Basic$60300~$0.40/ticket

EnterpriseCustom5,000+~$0.32/ticket

Gorgias prices by billable tickets —
Gorgias prices by billable tickets — "pricing that scales with your growth, not your headcount" — with the AI Agent as a separate per-resolution add-on.

Gorgias's AI Agent is a separate add-on at ~$0.90–$1.00 per resolved conversation (bundled in tiers). One important nuance: an AI-resolved conversation both consumes a billable ticket and incurs the AI fee — so budget for that double-count.

The two models are mirror images: Gorgias rewards small, efficient teams but penalizes volume (every ticket costs); Zendesk rewards high tickets-per-agent but penalizes headcount (every seat costs). The crossover where Gorgias starts to feel expensive and unpredictable sits around 2,000+ tickets/month.

A worked example: where the models cross

ScenarioGorgiasZendesk
Small store: 8 agents, ~1,500 tickets/moPro $360 (Basic $60 + ~1,200 overage @ ~$0.35 ≈ $480 is worse — so Pro wins)8 × $115 = $920 + AI add-ons
Scaling store: 20 agents, ~8,000 tickets/moAdvanced + ~3,000 overage tickets ≈ $900 + ~$1,080 = ~$1,98020 × $115 = $2,300 + AI
High volume: 40 agents, ~25,000 tickets/mooverage stacks fast → $$$ and unpredictable40 × $115 = $4,600 (flat per seat)

Illustrative list math, not a quote. The takeaway: at low ticket volume Gorgias is dramatically cheaper; as volume climbs, the per-ticket meter (plus AI double-billing) catches up and eventually overtakes Zendesk's flat per-seat cost. (Note how even the "small store" row flips once you do the real overage math — pick the plan that covers your volume rather than anchoring on the lowest sticker.)

Find your own crossover in 30 seconds. The whole decision reduces to one ratio — tickets per agent per month (your monthly ticket volume ÷ your agent count):

  1. Gorgias monthly ≈ (smallest plan whose allowance covers your tickets) + (tickets above that allowance × ~$0.35 overage) + (AI resolutions × ~$1).
  2. Zendesk monthly ≈ (agents × $115 Suite Pro) + (AI resolutions × ~$1.50).
  3. Compare the two. As a rough rule of thumb, the lines cross somewhere around ~500 tickets per agent per month (the exact point shifts with your AI volume and which Gorgias plan you land on): well below that, Gorgias's per-ticket model usually wins; well above it, you're resolving so many tickets per seat that Zendesk's flat per-agent price pulls ahead. Map it to the table above: the 8-agent/1,500-ticket store sits at ~190 tickets/agent (firmly Gorgias); the 20-agent/8,000-ticket store at ~400 is still Gorgias's, but the gap has narrowed to a few hundred dollars; and by the 40-agent/25,000-ticket store (~625/agent) the per-ticket meter overtakes Zendesk's flat seats. The closer you are to that middle band, the more it's worth modeling with your real numbers rather than trusting the rule of thumb.

A live test account showing Zendesk's Agent Workspace "All unsolved tickets" view with custom Views, status badges, and sortable columns — the general-purpose support depth Zendesk brings to any vertical. Gorgias trades that breadth for an e-commerce-native console: cleaner and order-aware out of the box, but built around the Shopify storefront rather than a multi-industry support operation.

Strengths & weaknesses, honestly

Gorgias — strengths: best-in-class Shopify/e-comm depth (order actions in-ticket); fast setup; revenue attribution; cheaper AI per resolution; very affordable at low volume; e-comm-tuned automation out of the box. Gorgias — weaknesses: per-ticket pricing gets expensive and unpredictable at scale (2,000+ tickets); AI double-billing; thin outside e-commerce; fewer integrations (~100); shallower reporting/KB/routing; voice/SMS cost extra per ticket.

Zendesk — strengths: industry-agnostic and enterprise-grade; advanced routing/SLAs/custom reporting; 1,500+ integrations; native voice + WFM + QA; mature self-service; per-agent pricing rewards high volume. Zendesk — weaknesses: shallow native order actions (needs Shopify apps); complex to configure; cost stacks via add-ons; AI needs historical-ticket cold-start plus per-resolution fees; overkill for small DTC stores.

What real users say

The headline ratings are close — but the base and the recurring themes differ sharply, and they track the general-purpose-vs-e-commerce split. (Observed June 2026.)

G2CapterraOther
Zendesk4.3 / 5 (~6,000+)4.4 / 5 (4,081)TrustRadius 8.7/10
Gorgias4.6 / 5 (~555)4.6 / 5 (134)Shopify App Store 4.3/5

Note the bases: Gorgias rates higher but on a much smaller, e-commerce-skewed review pool (~555 on G2, 134 on Capterra) than Zendesk's thousands — treat the half-star gap as directional, not decisive.

  • Zendesk — praised for omnichannel breadth and everyday agent usability across any industry: "a very good tool to provide customer support in an omnichannel way, it's easy to use" (Pablo T., CX Consultant, Capterra, Dec 2025). The recurring knocks are cost/pricing pressure and Zendesk's own support quality: "packed full of features… [but] for organizations with a tighter budget, it might be hard to justify the price" (Alexandra V., People Business Partner, Capterra, Mar 2026).
  • Gorgias — praise centers almost entirely on the Shopify/e-commerce depth, with order context living inside the ticket: "native ecommerce sidebar giving us quick access to customer orders" (Frank A., Head of Digital, Capterra, Mar 2026). The dominant criticism is cost relative to alternatives — the flip side of the per-ticket model: "pricing can be a little high in comparison to some other platforms" (Candace B., Operations Manager, Apparel & Fashion, Capterra, Apr 2025).

The pattern mirrors the pricing and fit story: Zendesk reviewers weigh breadth against what they pay; Gorgias reviewers love the e-commerce fit but feel the per-ticket meter.

Who each is genuinely for

  • Gorgias → Shopify/BigCommerce/DTC brands where most tickets are order-related (WISMO, returns, refunds, subscriptions); teams that want agents acting on orders inside the ticket and want to tie support to revenue; small-to-mid teams (roughly under 15–20 agents) that value fast setup over deep configuration.
  • Zendesk → general-purpose or multi-industry operations (SaaS, finance, healthcare, B2B, marketplaces); high-volume/high-complexity orgs needing advanced routing, SLAs, custom dashboards; larger teams (30+ agents) where per-agent beats per-ticket; anyone needing native voice, WFM, QA, community, or 1,500+ integrations.

Rough rule of thumb: Gorgias for Shopify DTC under ~15 agents; Zendesk for 30+ agents needing routing/SLAs/reporting. The middle is judgment-call territory — run the crossover math above.

The AI question — both assist, neither fully acts

Here's the honest 2026 read echoed across independent reviews: neither platform's native AI truly resolves tickets end-to-end inside your back-office systems. Gorgias AI is strong on e-commerce intents (order status, returns) and cheaper per resolution, but narrow; Zendesk AI is broader and more configurable but pricier and needs a cold-start. Both skew assistive (drafting, suggesting, deflecting FAQs) rather than autonomous (executing multi-step actions across order systems, subscriptions, 3PLs, and WMS).

That's exactly the gap an independent AI agent layer fills. A layer like Macha sits on top of Zendesk or Gorgias, reads order/subscription/back-office data, and takes action to resolve end-to-end — without ripping out the help desk you chose. It's complementary, helpdesk-agnostic, and priced per action rather than per ticket or per vendor-defined resolution. The honest caveat: a layer is another vendor and integration to manage, it only resolves as well as the knowledge you connect, and per-action pricing isn't free at high volume — it's additive, not a free win. (More: native AI vs. an AI layer and a chatbot that actually resolves.)

Before you switch: migration realities

Zendesk's own comparison actively pitches Gorgias→Zendesk migration for "growing operations," but the friction is real and under-covered. Tickets, tags, macros, custom fields, customers, and KB articles migrate with standard tools, but:

  • Off Gorgias → you re-architect the in-ticket order-action workflow; Zendesk needs Shopify apps/middleware to approximate it (expect some feature loss there).
  • To Zendesk → its AI reportedly needs ~1,000 historical tickets before automated resolution performs well — budget a ramp.
  • The pricing model flips from volume-driven to headcount-driven (or vice-versa) — re-model TCO before committing, and map tag/field schemas (they rarely match 1:1).

Frequently asked questions

Is Gorgias cheaper than Zendesk? At low ticket volume, much cheaper (plans from $10–$60). But Gorgias charges per ticket (plus AI double-billing), so above ~2,000 tickets/month it can overtake Zendesk's flat per-agent pricing. Run the crossover math at your volume.

Is Gorgias better than Zendesk for Shopify? For most Shopify/DTC brands, yes — order actions inside the ticket and revenue attribution are genuine advantages Zendesk doesn't match natively.

When should I choose Zendesk over Gorgias? When you're general-purpose or multi-industry, high-volume (2,000+ tickets), 30+ agents, or need native voice, deep routing/SLAs, and a large integration ecosystem.

Does Gorgias work outside e-commerce? Not well — it's purpose-built for online stores. For non-retail support, Zendesk is the better general-purpose fit.

Can I add real AI resolution to either? Yes — an AI agent layer like Macha adds autonomous, action-taking resolution on top of Gorgias or Zendesk, priced per action.

The bottom line

Choose Gorgias if you're an e-commerce brand whose tickets revolve around orders — the Shopify-native depth and revenue attribution are worth it, and it's cheap at low volume. Choose Zendesk if you're general-purpose, high-volume, or need depth and scale beyond retail. Run the per-ticket-vs-per-agent crossover at your numbers — and remember both native AIs lean assistive, so an AI layer on top is how you get genuine autonomous resolution either way.
