What Is the Cheapest AI Customer Support Agent in 2026?
Of the 17 AI customer support agents that publish a comparable price per resolution, conversation or ticket, Richpanel prints the lowest, $0.20 per AI-handled conversation on an annual contract, and has the lowest monthly total at 1,000 conversations, $269 including one required seat. The cheapest vendor that bills only for real resolutions is HubSpot, at $0.45 per resolution after a $90 seat and a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee. Vendors that bill by message credit, such as Chatbase and Microsoft Copilot Studio, can cost less at 1,000 but price a smaller unit, and several vendors give away a small monthly allowance for free.

Which AI support agents are cheapest at 1,000 a month?
This table ranks the eight lowest monthly totals at 1,000 billable units, from the AI Customer Support Pricing Index. We checked each price on the vendor's own page on 24 September 2026. Macha publishes the index and is one of the ranked rows; its row follows the same rules as the others. The total adds the minimum prerequisite, usually one help desk seat.
| Vendor | Billable unit | Unit price | Total at 1,000 incl. prerequisites |
|---|---|---|---|
| Richpanel (medium) | AI-handled conversation | $0.20 annual | $269 |
| eesel AI | Ticket or chat session, resolved or not | $0.40 | $400 plus your help desk |
| Freshworks | Session, resolved or not | $0.49 | $509 |
| HubSpot | Resolution | $0.45 annual credits | $513 plus $1,500 once |
| Tidio | Conversation with a Lyro reply | $0.58 annual | $583.33 |
| Macha | Ticket, resolved or not | $0.40 at each tier cap | $599 plus your help desk |
| Botpress | Conversation | $0.50 to $0.65 | $670 |
| Help Scout | Resolution | $0.75 | $775 |
What does "cheapest" mean when the units differ?
The vendors bill different events, so the lowest unit price and the lowest bill can belong to different vendors.
- Cheapest per unit: Richpanel at $0.20. Its visible card says "You pay only for the conversations they handle", while hidden markup on the same page says "resolved".
- Cheapest per resolution: HubSpot at $0.45, billed only when the conversation ends without a human.
- Cheapest total at 1,000: Richpanel at $269, then Freshworks at $509.
To compare a per-attempt price with a per-resolution one, divide it by the share of tickets the AI resolves. At a 50% resolution rate, Richpanel's $0.20 is $0.40 per resolution and a $0.40 per-ticket agent is $0.80. At 30%, the $0.40 agent costs $1.33 per resolution, more than HubSpot, Help Scout or Intercom's $0.99. The cost per resolution breakdown has the full conversion table.
Smaller units don't enter this ranking. Chatbase comes to $80 for 1,000 AI replies and Microsoft Copilot Studio to $80 for 1,000 conversations at Microsoft's own 8-credit example, plus an Azure subscription. Zoho Desk's Zia Agents cost one $7 Express user while conversations stay inside 30 million free tokens a month, though Zoho publishes no tokens-per-conversation figure. The index covers 32 vendors, so a vendor outside it may list a lower rate.
Is there a free AI customer support agent?
Not at support-team volume, but several vendors in the index publish a free allowance:
| Vendor | Free allowance |
|---|---|
| Botpress | 25 conversations a month, 3 seats |
| Alhena AI | 25 conversations a month, no overages |
| Chatbase | 50 message credits a month, 1 agent; agents are deleted after 14 days of inactivity |
| Tidio | 50 Lyro conversations, once |
| Gladly | 100 AI interactions to test, 1 seat |
| Freshworks | 500 sessions, once per account |
None covers 1,000 a month, so at support-team volume every one of them moves you onto a paid plan.
Why is the cheapest total not the cheapest option for every team?
The totals leave out the help desk that standalone agents run on. eesel AI and Macha read "plus your help desk" because they work inside the one you already pay for. If you already run Zendesk or Freshdesk, that seat is a sunk cost. If you'd have to buy Richpanel's help desk to use its AI, the $69 seat comes with a yearly contract.
Volume moves the ranking too. At 10,000 units, AI charges run $2,000 at Richpanel, $3,999 at Macha and $4,000 at eesel AI. Macha's $0.40 holds only at a tier cap, so a team using 1,000 tickets pays the 1,500 tier's $599, or $0.60 a ticket.
The pricing unit shows where each vendor's incentive sits. A per-attempt vendor earns the same whether its AI closes the ticket or fumbles it, so you carry the outcome risk and get a predictable bill. A per-resolution vendor carries that risk and charges more per unit for it, a median of $0.995 per resolution against $0.50 for the nine per-attempt vendors.
Where does Macha fit?
Macha bills per ticket: one thread with one person is one charge, resolved or not, with setup and monitoring by the Macha team included and no seat or platform fee. It suits teams on Zendesk, Freshdesk, Gorgias, Front, HubSpot or Intercom who want a flat bill per ticket and someone else to build the agents. On AI charges alone, before seats, HubSpot bills less than Macha's $3,999 at 10,000 tickets until its AI resolves about 89% of them and Help Scout until about 53%, so a team expecting modest resolution rates should price those first.
