The fastest, most reliable way to lower a Front bill is to stop paying for seats you aren't using, because Front charges per active teammate — so a handful of deactivated dormant users can cut your invoice more than any coupon or negotiation. After that, the savings come from being deliberate about three things: which tier you actually need, which AI add-ons you're paying for versus using, and how many separate inboxes and workspaces you're spreading a fixed set of seats across. None of these require giving up coverage; they require pruning waste. This guide walks through each lever in order of impact, keeps the numbers honest, and is upfront about where Front's own pricing structure makes cutting costs harder than it should be — and where a per-action AI layer changes the math entirely.

How to Lower Your Front Bill (Without Losing Coverage)

First, right-size your seats (deactivate vs. pay)

Front's pricing is per seat, and this is where most overspend lives. Per Drag's teardown of Front's plans, Front "runs $25 to $105 a seat with a 2-seat minimum," and every active teammate on the account is a line item. The single highest-leverage move you can make is auditing who's actually using their seat.

Go to Settings → Teammates. This is the screen where seats are managed, and it shows you every teammate, their status, and when they were invited. The people to look for: employees who left, contractors whose project ended, seasonal agents from a past peak, and internal stakeholders who were added "just to have visibility" and haven't opened Front in months.

For each of those, the choice is deactivate vs. keep paying. Deactivating a teammate frees their seat so you stop being billed for it, while preserving their conversation history and assignments for the record. You're not deleting data — you're releasing the seat. On an annual plan the saving is real: one deactivated Professional seat is $65/month, or $780 a year, off the invoice.

Front's Teammates settings is where you manage seats - and since Front bills per active seat, deactivating unused teammates here is the most direct lever for lowering the bill. Shown: the seat list with Status/Date invited columns. (Same seat-management surface as the small-teams post.)

The discipline to build: treat seat management as an offboarding step. When someone leaves the team, deactivating their Front seat should be on the checklist next to disabling their email. A quarterly seat audit — pull up the Teammates list, sort by last active, deactivate anyone who's gone dark — is the closest thing Front has to a "lower my bill" button.

Watch the tier cliff between Starter and Professional

Front's tiers don't rise gently — they step. Verified July 2026, the annual per-seat ladder is roughly Starter $25, Professional $65, Enterprise $105. The jump from Starter to Professional is a 2.6x increase per seat, and it's easy to trip into.

The trap is that Starter is deliberately narrow. As Drag notes, "the Starter plan caps at 10 seats and a single channel." That single-channel limit is the usual reason teams feel forced upward: the moment you need email and live chat, or email and SMS, Starter can't hold it and you're looking at Professional — at more than double the per-seat price. Featurebase's pricing analysis frames the same dynamic, warning that Front's cost "looks simple at first glance, but once you dig in, you'll find multiple plans, AI add-ons, and hidden service fees that can quietly 2x your monthly bill."

How to avoid paying the cliff before you have to:

  • Confirm you genuinely need the second channel across the whole team. If only two people handle SMS, routing that volume differently may keep the rest of the team on Starter.
  • Don't upgrade the whole account for one feature. Map exactly which capability is forcing the jump, and check whether a workflow change removes the need.
  • If you're already on Professional, make every seat earn it. At $65/seat, an unused Professional seat is the most expensive waste on the account — back to the seat audit.

Our full Front pricing breakdown lays out precisely what unlocks at each tier so you can see whether the tier you're on matches the features you actually use.

Skip the AI add-ons you don't need

This is where Front bills quietly balloon. On the Starter and Professional tiers, Front's AI capabilities are paid add-ons that stack on top of the seat price — they are not included. Per Featurebase, the common ones price at roughly Copilot $20/seat/month, Smart QA $20/seat/month, and Smart CSAT $10/seat/month, with the Autopilot resolution feature adding a usage fee of about $0.89 per resolution on top.

Do the arithmetic and the "quietly 2x" warning becomes literal. Featurebase's worked example: a 7-seat Professional team stacking those add-ons pays 7 × ($65 + $20 + $20 + $10) = $805/month — before Autopilot usage. The base plan was $455; the AI turned it into $805.

What you're paying forAdd-on cost (Starter/Pro)Cut it if…
Copilot (drafting assist)~$20/seat/moAgents rarely use the suggested drafts
Smart QA (auto quality scoring)~$20/seat/moYou already QA manually or don't score
Smart CSAT (auto sentiment)~$10/seat/moYou run surveys through another tool
Autopilot (auto-resolution)~$0.89/resolutionVolume is low or answers need a human

The honest audit: for each AI add-on, ask whether the team actually uses it every week. Add-ons get switched on during a trial or a "let's try AI" moment and then quietly keep billing whether or not anyone touches them. If Copilot's suggestions get ignored, or Smart CSAT overlaps with a survey tool you already pay for, turning it off is free money. Our Front AI explained guide covers what each of these features actually does, so you can decide from capability rather than fear of missing out.

Consolidate inboxes and workspaces

Seats in Front are the paid unit, but how you spread those seats across inboxes and workspaces affects how many you need. Fragmentation quietly inflates the seat count: when work is scattered across too many separate shared inboxes and workspaces, teams add people to seats just to give them visibility into a queue they'd otherwise miss.

Consolidation is the fix. A well-structured Front shared inbox setup — fewer, broader shared inboxes with clear routing rules — means one teammate can cover more ground without needing a seat in five different places. Before you add a seat, ask whether the coverage gap is actually a structure problem: could an existing teammate see this work if the inbox layout were simpler? Often the answer is yes, and the seat you were about to buy disappears.

This also compounds with the tier decision. Tidy routing can keep channel volume manageable within limits, and a lean, well-organized account is far easier to audit for the dormant seats we started with.

The honest verdict — and where per-action AI changes the math

Front earns its keep for a lot of teams, and it's worth saying plainly. Reviewers on Capterra consistently praise how it organizes email — sorting, assigning, keeping shared inboxes tidy — and how it streamlines multi-channel collaboration. The collaborative shared-inbox model is genuinely good, and for teams that live in it, the coverage is real.

But the complaints are just as consistent, and they're about cost, not capability. Drag's summary is blunt and matches the review chorus: "teams usually leave Front over cost, not capability," and "for a 15-person team, the all-in difference against a flatter-priced tool runs into thousands of dollars a year." The per-seat model punishes larger teams, the Starter-to-Professional cliff is steep, and the stacking AI add-ons are the part that surprises people on the invoice. If cost is your problem, our roundup of the best Front alternatives is a fair place to compare — though switching help desks is a heavy lift you shouldn't take on lightly.

There's a lighter option that doesn't require leaving Front at all, and it's where the AI math flips. Front's AI is priced per seat — you pay $20/seat for Copilot whether that seat sends one draft or a thousand. A per-action AI layer inverts that: you pay for the work the agent actually does. Macha is that layer — the broader category is AI agents for customer service — and it runs on top of the Front you already use through the Macha–Front connector, not as a replacement for it. Your inboxes, teammates, and rules stay exactly as they are. The difference is billing: Macha's credits are consumed per AI action, never per seat and never per resolution — automation and reasoning are priced for what's done, so a quiet week costs less than a busy one instead of the same flat per-seat charge. And because the agent can pull a real order or account status through a custom tool, it resolves the conversation rather than just drafting a reply for a human to send. For a team where AI is switched on across every seat "just in case," that shift from per-seat to per-action is often the single biggest line-item change available.

The clean playbook: deactivate dead seats, right-size the tier, kill unused AI add-ons, consolidate inboxes — then, if AI is what's inflating the bill, put the reasoning on a per-action layer instead of a per-seat one.

FAQ

How is Front billed — per seat or per usage? Per active seat. Front charges for every teammate on the account (with a 2-seat minimum), at roughly $25/seat on Starter, $65 on Professional, and $105 on Enterprise annually. The most direct way to lower the bill is to deactivate seats you aren't using under Settings → Teammates.

Does deactivating a teammate delete their data? No. Deactivating releases the seat so you stop being billed for it, but the teammate's conversation history and past assignments are preserved. It's the standard offboarding move — put it on your checklist next to disabling email.

Why did my Front bill jump so much? Two usual culprits: the Starter-to-Professional tier cliff (Starter caps at a single channel, so adding a second channel forces a 2.6x per-seat jump), and stacking AI add-ons. Copilot, Smart QA, and Smart CSAT are separate per-seat charges on lower tiers that, per Featurebase, can "quietly 2x your monthly bill."

Can I use AI on Front without paying per seat for it? Front's own AI (Copilot, Smart QA, Smart CSAT) is priced per seat as an add-on. An AI agent layer like Macha connects to Front as a live connector and bills per action taken rather than per seat, so you pay for work done instead of a license on every teammate.

Is it worth switching off Front to save money? Only if cost genuinely outweighs the collaboration you'd lose — switching help desks is a real migration. Before that, exhaust the in-account levers (seats, tier, add-ons, consolidation). If AI cost is the driver, a per-action layer on top of Front often solves it without a migration.
