ServiceNow completed its $2.85 billion acquisition of Moveworks on December 15, 2025, so buying Moveworks now means choosing between a standalone license at $150 per user per year on AWS Marketplace and ServiceNow's ITSM and HR packages that include it. Standalone suits a mixed IT and HR stack; the packages suit companies that run IT and HR on ServiceNow.

Key takeaways

  • Moveworks is sold two ways since ServiceNow bought it: standalone at $150 per user per year on AWS Marketplace, or bundled as Moveworks for ITSM in ServiceNow's packages.
  • ServiceNow completed its $2.85 billion acquisition of Moveworks on December 15, 2025, payable in a combination of cash and stock.
  • Moveworks at $150 per user per year for 1,000 to 2,500 users works out to $150,000 a year for 1,000 employees before negotiation.
  • ServiceNow introduced Otto on May 5, 2026 at Knowledge 2026, unifying Now Assist, Moveworks and AI Experience into one AI assistant.
  • Vendr reports a median ServiceNow contract of $127,118 a year across 108 purchases, while the Moveworks median is $130,000 from 31 purchases.
Moveworks vs ServiceNow (2026): Should You Buy Moveworks Standalone or Inside ServiceNow?

Since ServiceNow completed its $2.85 billion acquisition of Moveworks on December 15, 2025, the choice is between two ways of buying from the same company: Moveworks standalone, listed on AWS Marketplace at $150 per user per year (about $150,000 for 1,000 employees), or ServiceNow's ITSM and HR packages, which now include "Moveworks for ITSM" or "Moveworks for HR" in their tiers. Moveworks standalone fits a mixed IT and HR stack; the packages fit companies standardizing on ServiceNow. Everything below was checked on September 19, 2026, and the AWS and Vendr figures again on September 24, 2026, from ServiceNow's and Moveworks' own pages, AWS Marketplace and Vendr. Our Moveworks guide and ServiceNow AI agents guide cover each product in full.

What happened to Moveworks after the acquisition?

ServiceNow announced the deal on March 10, 2025, agreeing to acquire Moveworks "for $2.85 billion, subject to customary purchase price adjustments, payable in a combination of cash and stock," and completed it on December 15, 2025. Three product moves followed:

  1. February 26, 2026: EmployeeWorks. ServiceNow launched EmployeeWorks, combining Moveworks' assistant and enterprise search with ServiceNow's portal and workflows, and said "Moveworks continues to be offered as a standalone product within the ServiceNow portfolio."
  2. Packages. ServiceNow's ITSM packages page now lists "Moveworks for ITSM Foundation," "Moveworks for ITSM Advanced" and "Moveworks for ITSM Prime" inside the three ITSM tiers, and its HR Service Delivery page lists "Moveworks for HR" in HR Foundation.
  3. May 5, 2026: Otto. At Knowledge 2026, ServiceNow introduced Otto, which it says "unifies Now Assist, Moveworks, and AI Experience into one AI assistant." Per the launch release, Otto appears first in EmployeeWorks and the AI Control Tower and "will be rolled out across all products in the year ahead."

ServiceNow's own documentation already treats Moveworks as part of its employee-experience product line. The Moveworks overview in the Australia release docs sits under Unified Employee Experience, next to the EmployeeWorks web app and "ServiceNow Otto Chat Integration."

Why ServiceNow bought Moveworks

ServiceNow's announcement gives its reason: to combine "ServiceNow's agentic AI and automation strengths with Moveworks' front‑end AI assistant and enterprise search technology." ServiceNow owned the workflows behind IT and HR requests; Moveworks owned the conversation where employees ask for things, in Slack and Teams, often on top of ServiceNow. Before the deal, Moveworks already sold to ServiceNow customers as the front end on top of their ServiceNow instance.

The incentive follows from that. ServiceNow earns on platform packages and add-ons, so its interest is to make the Moveworks experience a reason to buy or upgrade ServiceNow, which is what bundling "Moveworks for ITSM" into every tier does. A standalone Moveworks deal is still for sale, but it's the smaller business for its owner, and EmployeeWorks and Otto are both ServiceNow-first.

What does each route give you?

Moveworks standalone is the assistant and search layer. Its ServiceNow integration page describes what it does with a ServiceNow instance: employees can "take various ticketing actions, file forms, receive ticket updates, and chat with a live agent - all within the Moveworks AI Assistant," and Moveworks "indexes forms and knowledge articles, while respecting user permissions." The same site has integration pages for Jira, Workday, Okta, Zendesk and Freshservice, so it can sit over a stack that isn't ServiceNow.

ServiceNow's packages are the system of record plus the AI. ITSM Foundation includes the service catalog, incident management, asset management and CMDB, Virtual Agent, "Now Assist and Platform AI Foundation" and "Moveworks for ITSM Foundation." Advanced adds change, problem and major-incident management, AI voice agents and process mining. Prime adds the "L1 Service Desk AI Specialist" and "AI Agents for ITSM." Its packages page doesn't say how much of the standalone Moveworks product "Moveworks for ITSM Foundation" includes (connectors to non-ServiceNow systems, for example). Ask before you assume.

The practical difference is where the work lives. Moveworks acts through other systems' APIs and gives employees one assistant over all of them. ServiceNow's packages own the tickets, approvals and workflows, and the AI runs where the work already is.

What does each cost for a 1,000-employee company?

Neither side publishes a price on its website. Moveworks has one public list price, on its AWS Marketplace listing: a 12-month contract for "1,000-2,500 users" at $150 per user per year. ServiceNow's AWS listing is private-offer only.

Vendr, a procurement service that competes with neither, reports a median ServiceNow contract of $127,118 a year, from $42,842 to $695,435, "based on data from 108 purchases," across all ServiceNow products. It says cost depends on which modules you buy and on "the quantity and classification of users (fulfillers vs. requesters)." For Moveworks, Vendr reports a median of $130,000 from 31 purchases, typical negotiated discounts of 15 to 30%, and implementation of $50,000 to $200,000 or more.

Still neededAn ITSM or HR system underneath, plus implementation ($50,000 to $200,000+ per Vendr)Implementation and add-ons; Prime for AI agents and the L1 AI Specialist

These two rows don't buy the same thing, which is the point of the comparison. If you already run ServiceNow ITSM on a current package, part of the Moveworks experience may already be in your contract, and a standalone Moveworks deal at $150 a user could pay twice for overlapping capability. If you don't run ServiceNow, the ServiceNow row means buying a whole service platform, and the Moveworks row is the only one that adds AI to what you have.

Which is better for IT and HR support?

For employee support on ServiceNow, the routes are converging. Moveworks' page for ServiceNow customers calls it "The AI front door to work" and promises to "Search and act across all your apps and ServiceNow workflows." ServiceNow's ITSM packages page makes the same pitch for its own tiers and cites "$750,000 IT cost reduction in tier-one services" and a "166% increase in self-service rate," without naming the customers behind those figures.

On a mixed stack, Moveworks standalone is still the only one of the two built for it. A company whose IT runs on Jira and whose HR runs on Workday gets one assistant over both from Moveworks; from ServiceNow it would get a migration.

On ServiceNow, the adoption signal is on the platform side. ServiceNow said EmployeeWorks "generated six deals exceeding $1 million each in net new annual contract value" in its first month. Moveworks' own homepage cites customers such as CVS Health (300,000 colleagues across IT, HR and procurement) and BambooHR (ticket volume down 20 to 30%).

What users say about Moveworks and ServiceNow

We read public ratings on September 19, 2026, including G2, where Moveworks is now listed under its post-acquisition name, ServiceNow EmployeeWorks: 4.4 from 128 reviews. ServiceNow IT Service Management holds 4.5 from 1,985 reviews.

On Moveworks' Gartner page, a senior IT help desk technician at a software company gave five stars in June 2026 and wrote: "Overall this product is incredibly powerful, with that power comes a big technical gap." On PeerSpot, a reviewer credited Moveworks with "lowering ServiceNow service desk calls by 90%, as users now prefer to ask questions through Moveworks in Teams before calling for help," which is the pre-acquisition pitch in one sentence.

On ServiceNow AI Agents' Gartner page, an IT associate at a small IT services firm gave four stars in June 2026, praising agents that run "natively within the environment you work in every day," and warning that "initial configuration demands solid platform knowledge, and the layered pricing model can make costs harder to predict." ServiceNow's core ITSM product rates 4.4 across 2,148 ratings, and Capterra scores ServiceNow 4.5 from 358 reviews. Trustpilot's 1.8 from 20 covers the whole company, not the AI products.

Both sets of reviews say the same thing: the products work, and they take skilled people to configure.

How we researched this

We read ServiceNow's acquisition, EmployeeWorks and Otto releases, its ITSM and HR packages pages, its Otto page and its Moveworks documentation in a browser on September 19, 2026, along with Moveworks' ServiceNow pages. We checked AWS Marketplace, Azure Marketplace and Vendr for both, captured the screenshots above, and read ratings on Gartner Peer Insights, Capterra, PeerSpot and Trustpilot. Neither product offers a trial and we opened no accounts, so we didn't use either; costs are the published list price and Vendr's buyer data, with our estimates labeled.

Should you choose Moveworks, ServiceNow or neither?

Choose Moveworks standalone if your IT and HR systems aren't all ServiceNow and you want one assistant over Jira, Workday, Okta and the rest, or if you're a ServiceNow customer on an older contract without a package that includes it. Budget from $150 a user a year plus implementation, and ask the sales team how standalone Moveworks fits Otto's roadmap.

Choose ServiceNow's packages if you run IT or HR on ServiceNow, or plan to. Moveworks for ITSM, Now Assist and Virtual Agent come with the tiers, Otto is where the assistant is headed, and Prime adds the AI agents. Before signing a separate Moveworks contract, get written confirmation of what your package's Moveworks entitlement covers.

Consider neither if the requests you need to handle come from customers, not employees. Moveworks and ServiceNow's employee packages are built for internal support. If your customer tickets live in Zendesk, Freshdesk, Gorgias, Front, HubSpot or Intercom, Macha fits: it's an AI agent layer on your help desk that answers and resolves customer tickets inside the help desk, priced per ticket from $299 a month for 750 tickets, with setup and monitoring by the Macha team. Our Zendesk vs ServiceNow comparison covers the help desk choice itself, and our overview of AI agents for customer service covers the AI side.

Frequently asked questions

What happened to Moveworks? ServiceNow completed its acquisition of Moveworks on December 15, 2025. It launched EmployeeWorks, built on Moveworks, in February 2026, and in May 2026 introduced Otto, which unifies Now Assist, Moveworks and AI Experience. Moveworks is still sold as a standalone product.

Why did ServiceNow buy Moveworks? In its March 10, 2025 announcement, ServiceNow said the deal would combine its "agentic AI and automation strengths with Moveworks' front‑end AI assistant and enterprise search technology." ServiceNow had the workflows; Moveworks had the assistant employees talk to.

How much did ServiceNow pay for Moveworks? $2.85 billion, "subject to customary purchase price adjustments, payable in a combination of cash and stock," according to ServiceNow's announcement.

Is Moveworks the same as ServiceNow Now Assist? No, but they're merging. Now Assist is ServiceNow's generative AI across its platform; Moveworks is the employee-facing assistant and search. ServiceNow's Otto combines Now Assist, Moveworks and AI Experience into one assistant, rolling out across its products over the year from May 2026.

Does Moveworks still work without ServiceNow? Yes. ServiceNow says Moveworks continues to be offered standalone, and Moveworks lists integrations for Jira, Workday, Okta, Zendesk and Freshservice. Its roadmap now runs through ServiceNow.

Moveworks vs ServiceNow: which costs more? Moveworks lists at $150 per user per year on AWS for 1,000 to 2,500 users, about $150,000 for 1,000 employees before negotiation. ServiceNow publishes no prices; Vendr's median across all ServiceNow purchases is $127,118 a year. They buy different things, and current ServiceNow ITSM packages already list a Moveworks entitlement.

Who does Moveworks compete with? Glean for employee search and assistance, general assistants such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, and IT-support AI specialists. Our Moveworks alternatives guide covers them.

Who is ServiceNow's biggest competitor? It depends on the product. In IT service management, buyers weigh it against Jira Service Management and Freshservice, the two alternatives Vendr's ServiceNow page names for negotiation. For AI agents across the enterprise, our ServiceNow AI agents guide compares it with Salesforce Agentforce.
