Is Help Desk AI Cheaper Than a Standalone AI Agent? 2026 Cost Comparison
Neither model is cheaper across the board. In our worked example of 2,000 tickets a month with the AI resolving half, native help desk AI costs $423 (HubSpot) to $1,462.50 (Zendesk) and standalone agents cost $800 (eesel AI) to $3,090 (Lorikeet). At that rate, the native AI from HubSpot, Help Scout (if the resolved tickets are chat sessions), Freshdesk and Intercom costs less than most standalone agents, while Zendesk's and Gorgias's cost more than every standalone agent except Siena AI and Lorikeet. At a 30% resolution rate the per-resolution native AI gets cheaper, and Gorgias ($786) and Zendesk ($862.50) drop below Macha and Yuma AI. The deciding factors are the billing unit, your resolution rate and whether the standalone vendor adds a platform fee. We checked every rate below on the vendors' own pages on 24 and 25 September 2026.
Key takeaways
- At 2,000 tickets a month with half resolved by AI, native help desk AI costs $423 at HubSpot, $750 at Help Scout (chat only), $980 at Freshdesk, $990 at Intercom, $1,386 at Gorgias and $1,462.50 at Zendesk.
- Standalone AI agents cost $800 (eesel AI), $990 (Fin on another help desk), $1,199 (Macha), $1,200 (Yuma AI), $2,550 (Siena AI, billed on every ticket) and $3,090 (Lorikeet) in the same 2,000-ticket example.
- Intercom sells Fin outside its own help desk at the same $0.99 per outcome, with a minimum monthly commitment, given as "e.g. 50 outcomes", instead of a seat.
- Zendesk's pricing page includes five automated resolutions per agent a month on Suite Team, so a five-agent team gets 25 before the $1.50 committed rate applies.
How do native and standalone AI prices compare?
The native rows assume you already run that help desk on a plan that includes its AI, so the seat isn't counted. The standalone rows run on top of the help desk you already have. Rates come from the AI Customer Support Pricing Index.
How we chose. The page covers the help desks most teams compare against a standalone agent (Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk, Gorgias, HubSpot and Help Scout) and every standalone agent in the index with a published unit price that runs on an existing help desk. Salesforce Agentforce, Gladly, Zoho Desk, Tidio and Front's Autopilot are native AI too; they're priced in the index but left out here because their prices are restricted to existing customers, sold through a separate app, token-based or not published as a usable rate. Quote-only standalone vendors such as Ada, Decagon and Sierra publish nothing to calculate with.

What does each option cost at 2,000 tickets a month?
Take a team of five agents handling 2,000 tickets a month, with the AI working every ticket. We ran the arithmetic on each vendor's published rate at two resolution rates. The 50% and 30% rates are round illustrations, not measured results; plug in your own from a pilot. The help desk bill is the same whichever AI you pick, so only the AI line is shown.
| AI option | AI resolves 50% (1,000) | AI resolves 30% (600) | Per resolution at 50% |
|---|---|---|---|
| HubSpot Breeze (native) | $423 | $243 | $0.42 |
| Help Scout AI Answers (native, chat only) | $750 | $450 | $0.75 |
| eesel AI (standalone) | $800 | $800 | $0.80 |
| Freshdesk Freddy (native) | $980 | $980 | $0.98 |
| Intercom Fin on Intercom (native) | $990 | $594 | $0.99 |
| Intercom Fin on another desk (standalone) | $990 | $594 | $0.99 |
| Macha, 3,000-ticket tier (standalone) | $1,199 | $1,199 | $1.20 |
| Yuma AI Starter, illustrative price (standalone) | $1,200 | $1,200 | $1.20 |
| Gorgias AI Agent, Pro annual (native) | $1,386 | $786 | $1.39 |
| Zendesk AI agents (native) | $1,462.50 | $862.50 | $1.46 |
| Siena AI, billed on every ticket (standalone) | $2,550 | $2,550 | $2.55 |
| Lorikeet Start (standalone) | $3,090 | $2,694 | $3.09 |
Some cells need explaining. HubSpot is 50,000 credits for 1,000 resolutions, minus 3,000 included, bought as 47 packs at $9. Freddy bills 2,000 sessions at $49 per 100 whatever the outcome. Gorgias is its $171 annual bundle for 190 interactions plus the rest at $1.50. Zendesk is (1,000 minus 25 included) at $1.50. Macha's 2,000 tickets fall on its 3,000 tier, which is $0.60 a ticket used. Siena AI's page doesn't say whether it bills unresolved tickets, so we billed all 2,000; if it bills only automated resolutions, its line falls to $1,650 at 50%. Help Scout's resolution is an AI chat session, so it only covers the chat share of the queue.
At 30%, the per-resolution vendors fall and the per-ticket ones don't move. Fin drops to $594, Gorgias to $786 and Zendesk to $862.50, while eesel AI stays at $800 and Macha at $1,199. The per-attempt break-even table shows where that crossover sits for each price.
Why is native AI priced the way it is?
A help desk vendor already earns a seat fee from every agent, so its incentive is to price the AI as a reason to stay on the desk. Zendesk and HubSpot put an allowance inside the plan (five resolutions per agent, or 3,000 credits), which makes the AI look free at trial volume and ties the upgrade decision to the seat. HubSpot's $0.45 needs the right plan. Customer Agent isn't available on Free or Starter, so a Starter team pays for Professional seats and the $1,500 onboarding before the first resolution.
A standalone vendor has no seat revenue to lean on, so it competes on the per-unit price or on a service layer. eesel AI charges $0.40 with no platform fee. Siena AI and Lorikeet charge a platform fee and sell implementation support. Intercom now sells Fin both ways, at the same $0.99 outcome, with one seat on its own help desk or a minimum monthly commitment on someone else's.
When does a standalone agent cost less?
- Your help desk's AI bills a high unit price. Against Zendesk's $1.50, a $0.40 per-ticket agent is cheaper per resolution once the AI resolves more than about 27% of tickets ($0.40 divided by $1.50). Against Gorgias, the break-even sits at about 44% inside the annual bundle ($0.40 divided by $0.90) and about 27% past it.
- You run more than one help desk. Native AI is bought per desk, with its own seats and allowances. A standalone agent that connects to more than one desk can cover them under one plan; Macha, for one, connects to Zendesk, Freshdesk, Gorgias, Front, HubSpot or Intercom.
- Your help desk doesn't sell the AI on your plan. HubSpot's Customer Agent needs Service Hub Professional, so a Starter team would pay for the upgrade first.
Native AI costs less when the help desk vendor already prices low (HubSpot, Help Scout, Freshdesk, Intercom) and you're on the qualifying plan, or when your resolution rate is low and the native AI bills per resolution. A per-resolution vendor earns only when its AI closes a ticket, so it prices each resolution higher; a per-ticket vendor earns on every ticket, so it prices lower and leaves the resolution risk with you. Our comparison of Zendesk's own AI agents with third-party agents covers the non-price differences on that one desk.
What resolution rates do teams report, and how does volume change the answer?
The 50% and 30% rates above bracket what merchants report on the Shopify App Store in 2026. On Gorgias's native AI Agent, Alessi USA reported exceeding "a 40% automation rate" at peak (19 June 2026) and Alessi's EU business "over 50% of customer inquiries" (1 September 2026). On the standalone Yuma AI, Tediber reported "30% of our tickets without any human interaction" (20 March 2026) and MESHKI US "35% automated resolutions in less than 6 months" (11 February 2026). The reviews are on the Gorgias listing, rated 4.3 from 705 reviews, and the Yuma AI listing, rated 5.0 from 9, as of 25 September 2026. The same Gorgias listing carries the counterpoint on price: CALASWIM wrote on 23 June 2026 that "the price per ticket is too steep".
Volume moves the ranking too. Platform and plan fees shrink per ticket as volume grows: Siena AI's $750 is $0.38 a ticket at 2,000 and $0.08 at 10,000, and Lorikeet's page moves teams above 5,000 tickets to its Scale plan, where the resolution rate drops to $0.90 but the plan fee rises from $2,100 to $5,100 a month. Per-resolution native AI scales in a straight line, so Zendesk at 10,000 tickets and half resolved is about $7,500 a month. Our 10,000-tickets-a-month breakdown runs every vendor at that volume.
What lock-ins and catches come with each option?
- Zendesk: the $1.50 rate is for a committed volume you buy in advance; pay-as-you-go is $2.00. Zendesk's help center has described the included allowance as a dollar amount per seat ($2 a month on Suite Team) since 18 May 2026, while the pricing page still says five resolutions per agent, so check which applies to your contract. The Zendesk AI pricing guide tracks the change.
- HubSpot: credit capacity packs can be canceled only at the end of the contract term.
- Gorgias: the AI fee is added on top of the help desk ticket fee for AI-resolved tickets, and the $1.50 overage applies past the bundle.
- Freshdesk: session packs expire with the billing cycle, and an email session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first email.
- Yuma AI: the Starter bundle covers about 12,000 resolutions a year; annual plans pause at the limit, and every plan carries a 12-month commitment paid upfront. Its page calls the bundle prices "illustrative annual prices, paid upfront" and sizes each bundle to your forecast.
- Lorikeet: plan fees are paid annually.
- eesel AI: it bills every ticket the agent handles, resolved or not, and its Enterprise plan adds a $1,000 monthly platform fee.
- Intercom Fin on another desk: outcomes include completed Procedures that end in a handoff, so the bill can exceed true resolutions.
- Help Scout: AI Answers resolves chat sessions only, so email tickets aren't covered.
- Siena AI: the page doesn't say whether unresolved tickets bill or how long the contract runs.
What costs sit outside the AI line?
The tables price the AI only. Someone also has to connect the knowledge the agent answers from, set its handoff rules and review its replies. With native AI that work usually falls on your own admins, inside a tool they already know. Standalone vendors split: eesel AI is self-serve, Siena AI and Lorikeet sell implementation and forward-deployed support, and Macha includes setup and monitoring by its team. Switching help desks to get a cheaper native AI adds migration work that no per-resolution price reflects.
Which option is best for which team?
- Already on HubSpot Service Hub Professional: Breeze Customer Agent, the cheapest AI line in the example at $423.
- On Help Scout with a chat-heavy queue: AI Answers at $0.75 per resolved chat session.
- On Zendesk or Gorgias with a resolution rate above about 27% to 44%: a $0.40 per-ticket standalone agent costs less per resolution than the native AI. A tiered vendor between tiers breaks even higher; Macha at 2,000 tickets ($0.60 a ticket) needs about 40% against Zendesk.
- On Zendesk or Gorgias with a low resolution rate: the native AI, because failures cost nothing.
- Running more than one help desk, or wanting the vendor to build the agents: a standalone agent.
Agent-assist copilots are a separate cost that this page leaves out: they're priced per seat rather than per ticket, such as Freddy AI Copilot at $29 per agent a month on Freshdesk.
Where does Macha sit?
Macha publishes the index and is a standalone agent layer that runs on Zendesk, Freshdesk, Gorgias, Front, HubSpot or Intercom. It bills per ticket, whether or not the AI resolves it, on a tier ladder where each cap works out to $0.40 a ticket. In the 2,000-ticket example it costs $1,199, more than eesel AI, Freddy and Fin, because 2,000 sits between its 1,500 and 3,000 caps; at 3,000 tickets the same $1,199 is back to $0.40 a ticket. Macha has no overage: agents pause when the month's tickets run out. Setup and monitoring by the Macha team are included, with no seat or platform fee. Macha fits teams on those help desks who want someone else to build and run the agents inside their existing queue. The Macha on Zendesk page shows how it sits on a help desk.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zendesk AI cheaper than a third-party AI agent? At Zendesk's $1.50 committed rate, a $0.40 per-ticket agent costs less per resolution once the AI resolves more than about 27% of tickets. In our 2,000-ticket example at 50% resolved, Zendesk's AI costs $1,462.50 and eesel AI $800.
Can you use Intercom Fin on Zendesk or another help desk? Yes. Intercom's pricing page lists Fin on an existing help desk at $0.99 per outcome, with no seat cost and a minimum monthly commitment it gives as "e.g. 50 outcomes".
Which help desk has the cheapest native AI? HubSpot's Breeze Customer Agent at $0.45 per resolved conversation, on Service Hub Professional ($90 a seat) with a $1,500 one-time onboarding fee.
Does Freshdesk's Freddy AI bill per resolution? No. Freddy AI Agent bills per session at $49 per 100, resolved or not, after 500 free sessions once per account.
Do standalone AI agents need their own help desk? No. eesel AI, Macha, Siena AI, Yuma AI and Lorikeet run on a help desk you already have, and that help desk's cost is separate. Our 1,000-tickets-a-month breakdown lists totals with prerequisites.
