What Does Front AI (Autopilot) Cost to Implement and Run? (2026)
Front AI implementation cost has two parts. Setup is $0 if your own admin builds an Autopilot agent, and Front's meter then bills each conversation once at the highest level the agent reached: $0.05 for triage, $0.39 for a handoff and $0.89 for a resolution, per Front's help center on October 14, 2026. At 1,500 conversations a month that's about $480 to $730 a month in our two example mixes. Paid setup runs from Smart Instinct's $3,750 build to Front's own $10,000 and $23,000 onboarding packages, and vendors that run their own agent on Front include setup. Our year-one estimates at 1,500 conversations a month run from about $9,100 to $45,200.
Key takeaways
- Front Autopilot bills each conversation once at its highest level: $0.05 for triage, $0.39 for a handoff and $0.89 for a resolution, with a 30-day trial covering up to 1,000 resolutions.
- At 1,500 conversations a month, Front Autopilot costs about $480 a month with 20% resolved and about $732 with 40% resolved, in our example mixes with every conversation at least triaged.
- Front requires an onboarding package on contracts over $25,000 a year, so a 20-seat Enterprise contract at $105 a seat, $25,200, adds at least $10,000 of Front Success Services.
- External AI agents built with Claude, Codex or another provider are included on every Front plan, so Front charges nothing extra, but the AI provider and your developers still cost money.
- Macha has no setup fee and costs $299/month for 750 tickets, with setup and a dedicated success manager included, and promises live in safe mode within 7 days, or your first month is free.
Disclosure: Macha publishes this blog and sells one of the vendor-led options priced below. Every outside price links to its source, read on October 14, 2026 unless another date is given, and every estimate is labeled as ours, with the arithmetic shown. This page covers cost only. What does Front Autopilot cost to run at 500, 1,500 and 5,000 conversations?
Front calls Autopilot "outcome-based". Its Autopilot help article (edited October 5, 2026) defines three levels and bills each conversation once, at the highest one reached:
| Level | What Front counts | Price per conversation |
|---|---|---|
| Triage | Routing, summarizing, tagging or classifying through Autopilot rule steps; no drafting or replying | $0.05 |
| Handoff | An AI agent drafts, replies or takes an action "intended for human takeover" | $0.39 |
| Resolution | No follow-up message from a teammate within 72 hours on email and portal, or 24 hours on Resolve, SMS, WhatsApp and custom channels | $0.89 |
Usage is pay-as-you-go and invoiced monthly; volume discounts are prepaid commitments. Front doesn't charge when Autopilot fails technically on its side. When we checked the pricing page on October 14, its AI block showed only "Starting at $0.05 /conversation"; the three levels sit in a pop-up behind it. A budget built from the visible line is too low for any agent that writes replies.
Assumptions (ours): an Autopilot rule touches every conversation in your shared inboxes, so each one is billed at least as triage. The cautious mix resolves 20%, hands off 30% with a draft and only triages 50%. The strong mix resolves 40%, hands off 30% and triages 30%.
| Conversations a month | Cautious mix (20% resolved) | Strong mix (40% resolved) | Cost per resolution, all-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | $160 | $244 | $1.60 / $1.22 |
| 1,500 | $480 | $732 | $1.60 / $1.22 |
| 5,000 | $1,600 | $2,440 | $1.60 / $1.22 |
The middle row, cautious: 300 x $0.89 = $267, plus 450 x $0.39 = $175.50, plus 750 x $0.05 = $37.50, or $480. That's $0.32 a conversation on average, and $1.60 for each conversation the agent actually closed, because handoffs and triage ride along with every resolution.
The meter's incentive mostly points the right way: Front earns more when Autopilot resolves. Two details cut against you. A customer who gives up and never writes back counts as a resolution once the 72 hours pass on email. And a handoff costs $0.39 whether the draft saved your teammate five minutes or got deleted. Watch the handoff share in Front's Agents report as closely as the resolution rate. Our Front AI pricing comparison runs the same meter against per-ticket billing.
The trial helps if you time it. It covers 30 days and up to 1,000 resolutions, and when it ends without an opt-in, Autopilot rules, Playbooks and Resolve channels stop running. At 1,500 conversations and a 20% rate, 300 resolutions fit inside it, so the first live month costs nothing. Start it when the agent is built, not on the day you start building.
Which Front plan, seats and add-ons do you need?
Autopilot is an add-on on every plan. The plan sets what surrounds the agent: rules, Copilot, QA and API limits.
| Item | Starter | Professional | Enterprise | Source (October 14, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seat price, annual (monthly) | $25 ($35), up to 10 seats | $65 ($85), up to 50 seats | $105, annual price only | Front pricing |
| Automation rules | Up to 10 | Up to 20 | Unlimited | Front pricing |
| Copilot | $20 a seat add-on | $20 a seat add-on | Included | Front pricing |
| Smart QA, Smart CSAT | Not offered | Not offered | Included | Front pricing; until early October they were $20 and $10 a seat add-ons on the lower plans (our Front AI explainer, September 24, 2026) |
| External AI agents | Included | Included | Included | Front help center |
| Autopilot | Per conversation | Per conversation | Per conversation | Front help center |
Rules matter because AI agents receive work through assignment rules. A Starter workspace with 10 rules has little room for an agent's routing next to the rules you already run, as our Front rules guide explains.
On annual billing, Professional plus Copilot costs $85 a seat against Enterprise at $105. The $20 difference buys unlimited rules, and it's now the only way to get Smart QA and Smart CSAT, which the October 14 page lists on Enterprise only. For a 10-seat team that's $10,200 a year against $12,600, before Autopilot.
Seat count can also trigger a services bill. Front's pricing FAQ says "we require an onboarding package be purchased for contracts over $25k". Counting seats alone, 20 Enterprise seats at $105 come to $25,200 a year, and 33 Professional seats at $65 come to $25,740. Either contract adds Front's $10,000 Professional Onboarding package, and Front's services sheet requires the $23,000 Enterprise package above $75,000 a year. Ask your account manager whether prepaid Autopilot commitments count toward the $25,000. Our Front pricing breakdown covers seats and contract terms in full.
External agents are "included in all plans" per Front's AI agents article, which means Front charges nothing. The agent still runs on a model you pay for. Claude, Codex or another provider bills its own usage, and your developers build, host and monitor the agent. Any integration calling Front's API also shares one rate limit per company: 50, 100 or 200 requests a minute by plan, per our Front API guide. Front sells increases at $200 per 100 requests a minute per month. Front's external agents article says they use a separate bandwidth lane through Front's MCP server.
What does setup cost by route?
| Route | Setup price | Time to live | What's included | What's left out | Source (read October 14, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your admin, Autopilot | $0 | No timeline from Front; 30-day trial | Front's help articles; Compass simulations for Autopilot agents | All configuration; Front suggests pasting its article into Claude or ChatGPT to draft your instructions (our guide) | Front help center |
| Your developers, external agent | $0 from Front | Your build time | MCP server access, assignment and @mentions like any teammate | The model's usage bill, hosting and monitoring | Front help center |
| Freelancer | Per project or per hour; one Front inbox project on Freelancer.com had a $10 to $30 budget and drew 63 proposals | Days | One bounded job | Tuning after handoff; few freelancers list Front AI work | Our Front partners research |
| Front Success Services | $10,000 for 25 hours; $23,000 for 60 hours; $3,000 per extra 8 hours | Not published; one customer quote says 250 users in three weeks | Project manager, workflow consultation, training, change management | No AI item in the published scope | Front Success Services sheet |
| Smart Instinct | Audit $750; builds $3,750, $10,500 or $17,500 | 2 to 4, 3 to 5 or 4 to 6 weeks | Up to 33, 90 or 150 hours, "good for 90 days from kickoff"; "AI that takes actions" from $10,500 | Work past the tier's limits ($1,500 per integration, $3,000 per brand); its Front page doesn't name Autopilot | Smart Instinct |
| Ridgeline Agency | "Scoped per engagement" | 4 to 8 weeks with AI | Autopilot scope, external agents, Compass, Smart QA | Price not published | Our Front partners list |
| Vendor-led, Fini | "Implementation included" | "Live in 14 days" | Setup inside Growth, $3,600 a month for 2,000 resolved tickets, per the page's structured data | The 90-day free pilot is on Enterprise only | Fini pricing |
| Vendor-led, Macha (ours) | No setup fee | Safe mode within 7 days | Ticket analysis, knowledge base, agent build, testing and tuning by Macha's team | Nothing extra; the free trial includes the same setup | Macha pricing |
The services rows price the Front workspace. Front's packages work out to $400 an hour on the $10,000 package and $375 an hour in 8-hour packs, and their scope is the workspace. Smart Instinct's tiers price integrations and brands. Neither row tells you who writes the agent's instructions and Playbooks unless you ask, so put that line in the statement of work.
What does it cost after launch?
After launch, someone reads the agent's conversations each week, sorts the misses, fixes the article, Playbook or instruction behind each one, and decides the next category. On Front that person also checks the handoff share, because each avoidable handoff is $0.39 plus a teammate's time.
| After-launch model | Published price (October 14, 2026) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Your own admin | No invoice; our estimate is 2 to 4 hours a week | Compass surfaces improvement suggestions; the Agents report splits agent-only, teammate-only and hybrid conversations |
| Front Success Services hours | $3,000 per 8 hours, existing Professional and Enterprise customers | Front's team, within the hours |
| Agency retainer | From $1,000 a month at Smart Instinct; Ridgeline's retainer covers "AI resolution rate optimization" at an unpublished price | Tuning within the retainer's scope |
| Vendor-led | Inside the monthly price: implementation and shared customer success at Fini; setup and a dedicated success manager at Macha | The vendor's team handles changes; you approve them |
The project rows all have end dates. Smart Instinct's hours expire 90 days from kickoff and its Front page says the build suits teams where "someone internal will own the configuration afterward". Front's hours end when the pack does. The hidden costs of AI support pricing follow the same pattern on every desk.
What does year one cost per route at 1,500 conversations a month?
This is our estimate for one Front team with 1,500 conversations a month in shared inboxes. Every assumption is listed so you can swap in your own.
Assumptions (ours, except where a source is named):
- Front seats are the same on every route, so they're left out. So is Copilot.
- Autopilot resolves 30%, hands off 30% and triages 40%: 450 x $0.89 + 450 x $0.39 + 600 x $0.05 = $606 a month. The trial covers the first live month, With launch around week 4 and the trial covering the first live month, that's 10 paid months (our assumption): $6,060. At 50% resolved, 30% handed off and 20% triaged, it's $858 a month, or $8,580 for 10 months.
- Your team's time is valued at $40 an hour.
- A year is 48 working weeks. Where your team owns tuning, it takes 3 hours a week. Included support is counted from kickoff: your tuning starts when it ends. Where a retainer or vendor tunes, your part is 1 hour a week of review from launch.
- Your setup hours (ours): 30 on DIY, 10 alongside a freelancer, 15 alongside Smart Instinct, 5 for Fini and 2 for Macha (a call and connecting Front).
- DIY: 30 hours to build, launch in week 4, tuning weeks 4 to 48 (45 weeks, 135 hours).
- Freelancer: 20 hours at $40, launch in week 3, then 2 weeks of help; you tune weeks 5 to 48 (44 weeks, 132 hours).
- Front Professional Onboarding: your admin still builds the agent (30 hours) and tunes it from week 4, because the package lists no AI item.
- Smart Instinct Professional: its hours run 90 days from kickoff, about 12 weeks. Launch is in week 5. You review 1 hour a week in weeks 5 to 12 (8 hours) and tune weeks 13 to 48 (36 weeks, 108 hours), or its entry retainer covers months 4 to 12 (9 x $1,000) while you review from launch in week 5 (44 hours).
- Fini Growth stays inside 2,000 resolved tickets. Macha works all 1,500 tickets, drafting or replying, so the 1,500-ticket tier applies ($599/month for 1,500 tickets). On vendor rows Autopilot is off.
| Route | Setup cash | Software in year one | Your team's time (hours x $40) | Year-one total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your admin, Autopilot | $0 | Autopilot $6,060 | 30 + 135 = 165 h, $6,600 | $12,660 |
| Freelancer, 20 hours | $800 | Autopilot $6,060 | 10 + 132 = 142 h, $5,680 | $12,540 |
| Front Professional Onboarding, you build the AI | $10,000 | Autopilot $6,060 | 30 + 135 = 165 h, $6,600 | $22,660 |
| Smart Instinct Professional, you tune after 90 days | $10,500 | Autopilot $6,060 | 15 + 8 + 108 = 131 h, $5,240 | $21,800 |
| Smart Instinct Professional plus retainer | $10,500 + $9,000 = $19,500 | Autopilot $6,060 | 15 + 44 = 59 h, $2,360 | $27,920 |
| Fini Growth | $0 | 12 x $3,600 = $43,200 ($36,000 billed yearly) | 5 + 46 = 51 h, $2,040 | $45,240 |
| Macha (ours) | $0 | 12 x $599 = $7,188 | 2 + 47 = 49 h, $1,960 | $9,148 |
The Front Onboarding row only belongs here if Front requires the package anyway. On a contract over $25,000 you pay it on every route, and the AI cost is the DIY row.
On cash alone, Autopilot run by your own admin costs $6,060, below Macha's $7,188. The totals separate because of the 165 hours. If your admin has 3 spare hours a week and your answers sit in Front's knowledge base, Autopilot in-house is a sound choice. If those hours would come from a new hire or from the people answering conversations, the vendor-led row costs less.
The rows don't buy the same work. Autopilot bills by outcome: in this mix it closes 450 conversations, drafts for 450 and leaves 600 to your team with only tags. Macha bills per ticket worked, drafting or replying on all 1,500. Fini bills per resolution against a monthly allowance. A team whose resolution rate climbs to 50% pays Front $2,520 more over 10 months, while Macha's tier stays the same.
We left out two routes. Ridgeline publishes no price, and an external agent's cost depends on the model's usage and your developers' time, which we can't estimate without your conversations.
What changes the price on Front?
| Factor | Why it changes the cost | Price signal (October 14, 2026 unless noted) |
|---|---|---|
| Handoff share | Every draft a teammate finishes is billed | $0.39 per handoff, against $0.05 for triage only |
| Channel mix | Email waits 72 hours to count a resolution, chat channels 24 | Silent customers on email are billed $0.89 |
| Individual inboxes | Autopilot only works in shared inboxes, so work has to move | More conversations metered once moved (shared vs team inboxes) |
| Contract size | Front requires onboarding above $25,000 a year | $10,000; $23,000 above $75,000 |
| Plan rule limits | Agent routing needs rules | 10 on Starter, 20 on Professional |
| API traffic | A layer or sync uses the company rate limit | $200 per 100 requests a minute per month |
| Non-English queues | Front says only English is optimized | More handoffs, so more $0.39 lines |
| Order, shipment or billing lookups | Answers need a live system, not an article | "AI that takes actions" starts at Smart Instinct's $10,500 tier |
Lookups matter most for logistics and B2B teams whose answers live in a carrier portal or an ERP. On Macha, Shopify and Stripe are built-in tools, and anything else with an API connects through a custom API tool that Macha's team sets up during onboarding, at no extra charge.
How can you cut the cost of a Front AI implementation?
- Start the Autopilot trial on live traffic. It covers 30 days and 1,000 resolutions. Build and simulate in Compass first.
- Ask Front for a usage cap. Its article says to contact Front to review a maximum limit of conversations, and billing settings show a month-to-date estimate.
- Point Autopilot at one inbox first. A narrow rule keeps triage charges off conversations the agent can't help with.
- Check the handoff share weekly. A category that mostly hands off costs $0.39 a conversation and may be cheaper left with people or answered with a better article.
- Write the AI work into any services contract. Front's published package scope has no AI item, and Smart Instinct's AI scope starts at $10,500.
- Compare Enterprise with Professional plus Copilot. The $20 a seat gap buys unlimited rules and Smart QA and Smart CSAT, which lower plans no longer offer.
- Try a setup before paying for one. Macha's free trial is $50 of free usage (about 125 tickets), no credit card, no time limit, with the same done-for-you setup, so you see drafts on your own Front conversations first.
Which route costs least for your situation?
These rows compare totals, not identical work: Autopilot bills by outcome, Fini by resolution, and Macha per ticket worked.
| You are | Lowest-cost route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A Front team with a strong knowledge base and an admin who has 3 hours a week | Your admin, Autopilot | $480 to $732 a month at 1,500 conversations in our mixes |
| A Front team with nobody to tune the agent | Vendor-led | Tuning sits in the monthly price; your part is about an hour a week |
| A team about to pass $25,000 a year with Front | Front Success Services for the workspace, AI from whoever will run it | You pay the package anyway; it lists no AI work |
| A team that already built an agent on Claude or Codex | External agent in Front | Front charges nothing; you pay the model and the upkeep |
| An email-heavy B2B team working from individual inboxes | Move work to shared inboxes, then price any route | No Front AI agent automates individual inboxes |
| A logistics or B2B team whose answers need a live lookup | Vendor-led, or an agency tier that builds actions | Articles can't answer "where is my shipment" |
| A team new to Front or migrating | An agency or Front's services for the build (migration checklist) | Migration is never inside an AI package |
| A Starter team under 10 seats | Copilot first, then a narrow Autopilot rule or a layer | 10 rules leave little room for agent routing |
Where Macha fits
Macha is one of the vendor-led options for Front, and it's ours. Macha's team classifies about a month of your past Front conversations, builds the knowledge base for the first category, builds the agent on your existing Front and runs it in safe mode, with drafts as internal comments, until your team approves them. Live in safe mode within 7 days, or your first month is free. Your part is a 30-minute call, about 15 minutes to connect Front and the tools answers come from, and about 5 minutes a day reviewing drafts.
It costs about $0.40 per ticket, which includes setup and a dedicated success manager who handles new categories, policy changes and new tools, on one plan priced by monthly ticket volume: $299 a month for 750 tickets, $599 for 1,500, $1,199 for 3,000, $1,999 for 5,000, $2,999 for 7,500 and $3,999 for 10,000, with custom pricing above that. There's no setup fee and no retainer, because the done-for-you setup and the tuning are the product. The Front connector uses a Front API token. Macha suits teams already running Zendesk, Freshdesk, Gorgias, Front, HubSpot or Intercom who want conversations worked end to end, including the lookups an article can't answer, without anyone on staff maintaining the AI. It doesn't replace Front's services team for a workspace build or a migration, and if your admin wants to own every Playbook, Autopilot in-house is the cheaper route. See Macha on Front, or request the free support audit to see which category to start with.
Common questions
How much does Front Autopilot cost per month?
Front bills each conversation once at its highest level: $0.05 for triage, $0.39 for a handoff, $0.89 for a resolution, invoiced monthly. In our examples, 1,500 conversations a month cost about $480 with 20% resolved and $732 with 40% resolved. Seats are extra.
Does Front charge a setup fee for Autopilot?
No. Autopilot is an add-on you switch on in billing settings, with a 30-day trial covering up to 1,000 resolutions. Front's Success Services packages, $10,000 and $23,000, are separate and required only on contracts over $25,000 and $75,000 a year.
Do external AI agents cost extra on Front?
Not from Front. Its help center says external agents are "included in all plans", while Autopilot agents need the Autopilot add-on. You still pay the AI provider for usage and your developers to build and maintain the agent.
Is Copilot included with Autopilot?
No. Copilot drafts for teammates and costs $20 a seat a month on Starter and Professional; it's included on Enterprise. Autopilot is billed per conversation on every plan, including Enterprise.
Who pays for tuning Front AI after launch?
On the DIY, freelancer and Front services routes, your team does. Smart Instinct's included hours end 90 days from kickoff, and its retainers start at $1,000 a month. Fini includes implementation and shared customer success in its plan; Macha includes setup and a dedicated success manager who handles changes.
Is Autopilot cheaper than a third-party agent on Front?
On software cash, Autopilot often is: about $6,060 a year in our 1,500-conversation example against $7,188 for Macha. Totals depend on who spends the 3 hours a week tuning it. Our cross-desk implementation cost guide runs the same comparison on other help desks, and our Gorgias and HubSpot versions use the same method.
How we researched this
On October 14, 2026 we checked the raw HTML of Front's pricing page, including the Autopilot pricing modal and the plan data that holds monthly seat prices, plus Front's help articles on Autopilot (edited October 5), AI agents (edited October 5) and external AI agents (edited October 13). We confirmed the Success Services sheet linked from the pricing page was still live; its package prices are as read for our Front implementation guide the same day. We read the pricing pages of Smart Instinct and Fini; Fini's Growth fee comes from the page's structured data, not its price cards. Ridgeline's scope and the Freelancer.com project come from our Front partners research the same day. The Smart QA and Smart CSAT add-on prices are from Front's pricing page on September 24, 2026; on October 14 the page listed both on Enterprise only. Front's API rate limits come from our Front API guide. The conversation mixes, hours, hourly rate and launch weeks are our assumptions, not anyone's published figures, and nobody can promise a resolution rate before seeing your conversations. We didn't hire Front's services team, an agency or a freelancer for this page, none paid for placement, and we haven't run Autopilot on a paid Front account since Front's October 2026 billing change.
